Experienced, Professional Engineers

Aquaheat Services are dedicated to complete understanding: our Engineers work on oil appliances as easily as with gas recognising very little distinction. It is a legal requirement for anyone installing oil-fired appliances to not only be registered with OFTEC but to also be registered for the work being undertaken.

Oil Fired Technical Association

OFTEC has been a leading voice in the heating industry for over 25 years. It was formed in 1991 and replaced the former Domestic Oil Burner Equipment Testing Association, an organisation created after the enforced split of Shell-Mex and BP in the early 70s. The trade association continues to be exclusively oil-related, but OFTEC's competent person scheme now includes scopes of registration for renewable technologies - reflecting the more diverse off-gas heating industry of today.

OFTEC’s original role was to write new technical standards and training manuals, and to provide a focus for the industry. When this was achieved, OFTEC’s role extended into promoting the oil fired heating and cooking sector. OFTEC’s aim is to promote the highest professional standards across the industry and provide efficient service and support.

What is a Competent Person?

Finding a competent technician to install or service heating equipment used to be a challenge. That changed in 2002 when the Government removed some of the guesswork by introducing the idea of officially recognised 'competent person schemes', for a range of building trades, with the aim of improving standards within the building industry. Heating is one of the trades covered and OFTEC’s competent person scheme is a register of installers of oil, solid fuel and renewable heating equipment. Around 8,000 technicians are registered with OFTEC’s competent person scheme.

To become OFTEC registered, Aquaheat Services engineers had to undertake approved training courses and assessments and we as a business are also inspected regularly by OFTEC to ensure our work and processes meet the required standards.

Unlike the Gas Safe Register for gas works, there is very little regulation in regards to who can and cannot work on oil. However, Aquaheat Services believes that the peace of mind offered by a OFTEC registered engineer with proven experience and skill gives us an advantage with full recognition in case of an emergency by insurers and the backing of Liability Insurance. OFTEC registered servicing technicians, like Aquaheat Services, are trained to follow a set of procedures that ensure that all aspects of the heating system are checked and maintained in accordance with industry and manufacturers’ approved standards.

What to do if you Suspect a Oil Appliance is Dangerous?

If you suspect you have a dangerous oil appliance, leaking oil tank or may have inhaled carbon monoxide, call Aquaheat Services immediately.

Also, switch off any appliances and turn off the oil supply at the tank; if you cannot stop any leakage by isolating the oil, and the leak is coming from the tank, you can call your Oil Supplier or Dr Boilers for a quick response to an environmental issue. Seek immediate medical attention if you suspect any ill effects of the Carbon Monoxide.
